Police Investigate a Saturday Afternoon Murder in Southland

A 58-year-old white man was found beaten to death inside a unit of Rock Brook Apartments, 3326 Rock Brook Dr., in the Southland area of San Angelo Saturday afternoon.

According to San Angelo Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Cade Solsbery, police were called to the apartment via 9-1-1 by the girlfriend of the victim at 4:20 p.m. The witness told dispatch that her boyfriend had been assaulted.

The woman told police she arrived at her apartment after the assault took place and found her beaten boyfriend’s body. On her way to the apartments, she stated she saw her son walking from the general area.

Solsbery characterized the injuries that killed the man as being caused by blunt force trauma, but he didn’t have information on what kind of weapon was used.

The only witness who found the body is the victim’s girlfriend, Solsbery said.

San Angelo Police Detectives Jason Chegwidden and Michael Gaeta are investigating the case, he added.

Shortly after police arrived, another police unit located the suspect, the son of the girlfriend, walking in the 3000 block of the Houston Harte Expressway, near Olive Garden. He was detained and taken to the police station for questioning.

At this time, police are not releasing names pending notification of next-of-kin.

Solsbery said an autopsy will be ordered as soon as the justice of the peace completes their part of the investigation.

At the scene, two CID units scoured the apartment for evidence as the dead man’s girlfriend stood on the balcony of the second-story apartment talking with police.

Solsbery said it is very early in the investigation, and police are treating the incident as a homicide. As more information becomes available, police will keep us updated.
