A Pursuit, Drugs and Pistol in Eastland County

At approximately 2 p.m. Sunday, an Eastland County Department of Public Safety trooper was involved in a pursuit with a Ford pickup on IH-20 for a traffic violation. However, the driver decided to lead the trooper in a pursuit, said Frederick Biddle, public information officer for DPS.

“As the driver took off and the pursuit was initiated, the passenger was observed throwing a pistol out the window,” Biddle stated.

Biddle said the pursuit came to an end near Carbon at about 2:20 p.m. where the driver and passenger fled on foot. A short time later, the passenger, Rachel Smith, of Hico, was apprehended; however, the driver, Daniel Shead, also of Hico, wasn’t taken into custody until around 8:30 p.m.

Biddle said drugs and a pistol were recovered from the vehicle, and he is not aware at this time what charges will be filed. He will, however, provide more information once received.
