Two Robberies, One Night, No Bond and Interesting Arrests in San Angelo

Overall, Thursday was a slow day for arresting agencies. Twenty people were arrested, and out of those arrests, six included new complaints, and the other 14, warrants. While most of the new complaints consisted of DWI and Public Intoxication, two suspects, Purvis Lee Williams, 54, and Christopher D. Mitchell, 24, decided it was a night for hitting people and committing robbery.

In regards to Williams, Chief Tim Vasquez with the San Angelo Police Department said officers were dispatched to a fight at the Stripes on Avenue J and Bryant Blvd. When officers arrived, the victim stated he was hit in the head by Williams. During the incident, the victim dropped the money he was holding and stepped back. That’s when Williams grabbed the money and ran out of the store.

Vasquez stated Williams crossed the street to the Cross Keys Apartments on Bryant Blvd. where officers located him. The suspect had given the money to the apartment manager there, who in turn, gave it back to the victim. Vasquez noted that the victim followed Williams to the apartment complex.

When officers located Williams, they arrested him and booked him at 9:32 p.m. into the Tom Green County Jail. As of yet, his bond has not been set. This robbery marks the 36th arrest for Mr. Williams in Tom Green County. Vasquez added that it’s unknown if the offender knew the victim.

In a similar incident at the Concho Valley Transit District on North Chadbourne St., a female victim stated that Mr. Mitchell demanded she pay him some money earlier in the day. She went to the bus station to take the bus somewhere else Thursday night when Mitchell showed up at the Transit District in a cab. He located the victim and demanded the money she owed him. That’s when things got violent.

“He pushed her down and assaulted her,” Vasquez added. “He took her money and left, and we found him walking towards a hotel on South Bryant.”

Vasquez said SAPD received information of where Mitchell was staying, so they followed him there. Officers found the money on the suspect and made the arrest. Mitchell was booked into the jail at 12:45 a.m. After his arrest, officials learned Mitchell had three arrest warrants in Lubbock County for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Tampering/Fabricating Physical Evidence with Intent to Impair. No bond amount has been set for Mitchell as of yet for the robbery. The bond amounts for the warrants include a $10,000, $1,500 and another $10,000 Surety Bond.
