Man Shoots Himself after Monday Morning Police Standoff

A police standoff ended abruptly early Monday morning when the subject, a 45-year-old man, shot himself in the abdomen and walked out.

According to police, a call came into dispatch at 12:44 a.m., which directed patrol officers to the Sedona Ranch Apartments in the 2900 block of Sunset Drive. The reason for that call has not yet been released.

On scene, police were met with a barricaded subject, who refused to leave the apartment for several hours. Members of the San Angelo Police Department's Hostage Negotiation Team attempted to diffuse the situation and urge the man to exit, however he remained inside, ultimately shooting himself and then walking out.

The apartment was not his, but no one else was present with him during the standoff or shooting.

Outside, members of the SWAT team took the man into custody and he was transported to Shannon Medical Center. He was last reported alive; however, an update on his condition has not been provided.

Members of the SAPD's patrol, Swat, hostage negotiation and criminal investigation divisions were present and assisted during the standoff.
