Merkel Man Jailed for Sexual Assault of a Child Monday

A 30-year-old Merkel man was picked up by deputies from the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office on Monday on a second-degree felony warrant for sexual assault of a child.

A complaint filed in the case states that Jason Mark Nelson sexually assault a female child under 17 on at least two occasions, both in San Angelo and in Abilene.

According to the complaint, law enforcement got wind of the abuse when San Angelo Police Officer Kelli Reeves was working security at the SAISD's Carver Learning Center and learned of an outcry the child had made of sexual assault.

The child victim was later interviewed locally by forensic interviewer Monica Escobedo of the Children's Advocacy Center's Hope House, who learned that the alleged abuse occurred in San Angelo on Sept. 27, 2014.

The mother of the victim was interviewed by det. Brian Elkins, and confirmed that her daughter had spoken to her about the abuse. She relayed that the child had asserted the sexual abuse had also occurred in Abilene.

Another woman with possible knowledge of the abuse, Patricia Nelson, had not consented to an interview at the time the complaint was written, on Jan. 29, 2015, however she has stated she is aware of the charges against Nelson. Jason Nelson had not consented to an interview at that time either, the complaint states.

On Monday, sheriff's deputies served an arrest warrant on Nelson and took him into custody. He was booked into the Tom Green County Jail at 5:15 p.m., and was noted to live in Merkel. He is currently being held against a $50k surety bond. A second-degree felony is punishable by 2-20 years confinement and a fine not to exceed $10k.

In addition to Nelson, 26 others were put behind bars on Monday, carrying seven theft charges, four marijuana possession charges and three assaults between them. Monday's booking report further reflected two burglary charges, and one charge apiece for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, public intoxication and injury to a child/elderly/disabled person.

Many of those jailed were also charged with warrants or committments, and most were booked on multiple charges.

Twenty inmates were released on Monday.

OK. So someone is lying. Shall we allow the Judicial System time and Authority to resolve this issue? Or, should your brother in law be immediately released on PR? 'Personal recognizance means the pretrial release of a defendant from jail or arrest by a judicial officer without bail. The defendant is released on the basis of a promise made by him/her to return to court. A defendant is released upon some conditions imposed by the court ordering the release and often without a bond. Sometimes personal recognizance is also called as own recognizance. It is commonly granted in traffic matters, minor and technical crimes.' (http://definitions.uslegal.com/p/personal-recognizance/)

So if dear sweet Mom knew of this and didn't report it, why is dear sweet Mom not in a cell next to this slug ?

the mother is just as guilty as the jason nelson. simply due to the fact that she knew of this abuse and failed to report it to the local authorities for the sake of her daughter. she knew of this and just blew it off after her daughter confided in her about this terrible incident. she denied her daughter safety by failing to notify the police. she should be charged along with this sick man who committed this crime. this is the problem with society. children who confide in their parents about a very serious situation and their parents just brush it off as no big deal or tells their child that they are lying. i went through this when i was 9 and when i tried to tell my mother.....i was called a liar and was told that i was doing it for attention. these types of situations should be taken more seriously instead of just shrugged off. i hate to say this but im just going come right out and say it. SOME PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE CHILDREN. especially if they dont take them seriously about these kind of issues when informed about them.

Would you want to be found guilty without all the facts being presented? I have a personal connection to this case and I am hear to tell you there are two sides to this story and you haven't heard much of either side and yet pass judgement on him. Remember that it only takes one vindictive child/ person to ruin your life. It can happen to you. The child in question has a history of accusing men of sexual assault, she has accused the very father that she is living with of sexual abuse, yet he is not being brought up on charges. That accusation happened before this one. She is a mentally and emotionally disturbed child who is being fueled by her extremely vindictive father. And before any can say I don't know what I am talking about. I have suffered abuse most of my childhood and I know for a fact that this man is not capable of sexual assault.

He has been released, all charges dropped due to NO evidence. Where is the report to clear his name?
