Single Shot Fired After Fight at Big Sid's Birthday Bash Pre-Party

Several SAPD patrol units were dispatched to Beauregard Place, 1421 W. Beauregard Avenue, at around 2:12 a.m. Saturday morning, when a large fight broke out amongst attendees of an event promoted by Big Sid.

The fight was broken up, Police Chief Tim Vasquez said in an email, and the groups involved dispersed, only to meet up once again in the MHMR parking lot next door.

Once in the lot, an unknown male pulled out a gun and fired one round, Vasquez wrote. Witnesses stated that he fired up into the air and there were no reports of anyone being shot. The witnesses could not provide a good description of the subject, and one 9mm casing was found in the MHMR parking lot.

Big Sid is a local promoter of rap music concerts in San Angelo. This year's show was promoted to include performances by Big T-Pain and special guests The One and Only and B'Hill. The event was held at the building that formerly housed The Oasis on Beauregard Ave.

Clarification: The shots were fired following the "pre-party" Friday night, held before the main event Saturday night. The Saturday event was held with no problems, according to San Angelo police.

Reaction:

Big Sid Walker, owner of WRI MUSIC GROUP/ PLAYAZ CHOICE, who organized the event, said in a Facebook post that the subsequent shot fired into the air was in no way connected to his event.

"For ten years we have been dedicated to bringing fun and exciting entertainment to San Angelo, The safety and well-being of our patrons are of the utmost importance. We ensure local security and police are always on hand at all events. There have not been any altercations that our personnel have not been able to handle. We condemn violence and inquiries pertaining to alterations or criminal acts that may have happened away from our events should be directed to law enforcement personnel."

Law enforcement personnel said that after police broke up the fight at the event venue, the groups fighting met up again in the MHMR parking lot next door. That is when the shot was fired.

A late night scuffle in a San Angelo parking lot? Surely it was over something very important....maybe a philosophical debate, a heated discussion about Expressionism vs. Impressionism in the art world or a disagreement about regulations and transparency among hedge fund investors -- you know, the typical concerns of Sid's target audience.
Wow- so what is so NOT shocking is that the stereotyping happened so fast, however not shocking it was from these 2 posters above. Hang around ANY bar - Country, Tejano, Rock, Rap or VFW or bingo hall at 2 am & I can pretty much guarantee there will be parking lot fights. I've dealt with it for years in my business. To say it was because of "who" was in attendance just shows how small minded you are. If you're going to try to show off your your expertise & knowledge, at least have some.
I'm just curious as to how my post suggested that the knuckle draggers who fight in parking lots after a night of Narco Corridos or line dancing were any better than the disgruntled geniuses who bounce around to the sounds of clicks and whistles at Rap concerts. To hone in on the riff-raff's antics at Rap shows without recognizing the contagion which IS ignorance and frivolity elsewhere would be letting a whole lot of people off the hook.
Big Daddy - your initial post was "Shoots fired at a Rap event?? Got to be a first." and Lares Deces - your post stated "you know, the typical concerns of Sid's target audience." My point was & still is, this is very stereotypical & is no more intelligent than the act of ONE person at the event. Have you ran nightclubs and dealt with large crowds of people and were you there when this happened to know the facts of who was involved & what EXACTLY happened? Because I can answer YES to both of those. I've had a WHITE FEMALE shoot in my parking lot & then try to run over people to get away, I've also had a HISPANIC MALE swing a knife at me in a parking lot fight I was breaking up. I can also assure you there were highly educated "non riff raff" in the club who didn't fall prey to the "contagion" as you call it who were there to enjoy the night. I know of several near retirement time military members who were there & even an off duty detective just enjoying the show. Truth is, there was no "big fight" as was reported, I know because I broke up the "2 GIRLS" who started it, others of course gathered around as ANYONE AT ANY BAR FIGHT, or even schoolyard fight, WILL DO - the fight was over within 15 seconds. It was closing time so everyone at this point was told to leave & the officers who were hired to be security the entire night in the venue went outside with them. If the altercation was then allowed to "move over to the adjoining parking lot to continue where a male then fired this shot", then I'd say that was a slip up on the officers who were out there with them & maybe that fact should be more looked into. My biggest problem is the fact that so many people hear RAP & think (dare I say it) "blacks" & off they go on their assumptions that it HAD to be because everyone who goes to these shows has to be "pants sagging, firearm hiding gang bangers" & its simply not true.
I'm not sure if you actually read thoroughly & want to have an educated conversation about these topics or if you just keep trying to come up with stupid stuff to post to see your name in print. Again, please read the Live article AND my post that both state - NO ONE KNOWS WHO FIRED THE SHOT ! I never claimed to know, as I stated, once the fight was broken up & ALL patrons were sent outside with the police officers who had been working security inside all night, we were busy inside getting the venue ready to close for the night. It was then that we were told of the shot outside by the officers who were out there when it happened.
