Street Sweeper Causes Major Collision with Dodge Ram
Friday, at approximately 4:45 a.m., San Angelo Police responded to the 4400 block of Sherwood Way for the report of a major traffic crash.
Upon arrival, police located a two-vehicle collision involving a commercial street sweeper and a Dodge Ram pickup. The driver of the street sweeper, a 22-year-old San Angelo resident who was trapped inside the vehicle, had to be extricated by San Angelo Fire Department personnel. The driver was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries. The driver of the Dodge pickup, a 24-year-old resident of El Dorado, Texas, was also transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries.
Subsequent to the crash investigation, police learned the driver of the street sweeper exited a parking lot on the north side of Sherwood Way with the intent to cross traffic lanes to a parking lot on the south side of Sherwood Way. After leaving the parking lot, the street sweeper was struck on the driver’s side cab area by the oncoming Dodge pickup that was westbound on Sherwood Way. After the collision, the street sweeper continued traveling south across lanes and off the roadway where it sheared off a fire hydrant and utility pole before coming to a stop.
Both vehicles sustained severe damage from the crash. Both drivers were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. The street sweeper’s inattention and failure to yield the right of way from a private drive were listed as the contributing factors to the crash.
No citations have been issued at this time.
