News flash: Marijuana does not smell like incense. Nor does the odor dissipate quickly when smoked in tight spaces such as vehicles.
That was a lesson 28-year-old Peter Anthony Rios learned on Saturday after being stopped near the 600 block of W. Ave. K for a traffic violation. Rios was apparently also unaware that police units come equipped with computers enabling officers to more easily verify the truth or falsity of ones personal information such as names, and provided SAPD Patrol Officers J. Cannady and A. Castro, with a fictitious persona when asked to identify himself.
When the officers smelled the suspicious odor emanating from the vehicle, a probable cause search was conducted, which returned $245 in cash and approximately 12.7 grams of pot. A search of the vehicle returned circa 35.5 grams of methamphetamine and an additional $1,215 cash.
Rios was arrested and taken to Tom Green County Jail for Failure to Identify Giving False/Fictitious Information, Class B Possession of Marijauna, and 1st Degree Felony Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance.
