PECOS, TX — One person is dead, and four others are injured following a train derailment that struck the Chamber of Commerce building in Pecos on Wednesday evening, Pecos City Manager Charles Lino confirmed during a press conference.

This happened around 5 p.m. near Oak Street and Dot Stafford Street after the train collided with a tractor-trailer. Lino reported that three of the train cars were carrying hazardous materials but assured the public that the materials had been contained.

The train which had the right-of-way struck an oil field vessel weighing over one hundred thousand pounds at 68 miles per hour having slowed from seventy. The three engines weighed over one million pounds and put an eight inch dent in the steel tube.

The load was reportedly stuck on the tracks for about forty-five minutes ans no one called the 800 number posted on the cross bucks or the equipment building that controls the gates to notify the railroad of the problem.

Both the Engineer and Conductor were killed.

In the State of Texas, there is no standardized way for Law Enforcement to stop a train. They simply don't know how. Something must be done

Sounds like the trucking company is largely at fault for the untimely deaths of these poor souls. 45 minutes left plenty to be done like a phone call.. sue the shit out of them. Put them so far in debt that they can't come back. Then maybe then someone will learn what the proper procedure is when stuck on a train track with a deadly load.
