Merkel Man Killed in Crash

MERKEL, TX — A 62-year-old Merkel man was killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of FM 1235 and Wimberly Road in Taylor County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Steven Greg Anderson, 62, of Merkel, was pronounced deceased at 4:50 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Robert Jones. He was driving a 2011 Ford F-150 pickup truck eastbound on FM 1235 and was not wearing a seat belt when he was ejected in the collision, the DPS reported.

The other driver, Andrew Aiden Kaufmann, 19, of Abilene, was traveling south on Wimberly Road in a 2018 Toyota Camry. He failed to stop at the posted stop sign and entered the intersection, where he was struck by Anderson’s truck, the preliminary investigation found. Kaufmann sustained minor injuries and refused transport for treatment.

The crash occurred at 3:45 p.m. Monday. The weather was clear and roads were dry. The posted speed limit was 70 mph.
