SAN ANGELO, TX — Thick black smoke billowed high into the early evening sky as firefighters from the Dove Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on US 67 South near the Bryant Lane intersection Wednesday evening.
Upon being dispatched, crews were initially told they were responding to a vehicle fire. However, as they approached the scene, dispatch radio traffic indicated there may be a fatality involved. At this time, there is no official confirmation of any fatalities.
Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office closed US 67 at the county line while firefighters worked the scene. Traffic is backed up for miles in both the southwestbound and northeastbound lanes.

A west bound crew-cab pickup pulling a utility trailer crossed the medium into the path of a Dunnigan saltwater disposal semi and struck the semi in a glancing head-on collision. The two vehicles caught fire and exploded. The semi driver appeared to escape the fiery wreck but the pickup driver or a passenger did not. Due to the fatality, all three lanes were shut down and appear to still be closed as of 9:30 tonight. The Irion County VFD and a Irion county tank truck also responded. The wreck occurred just inside Irion County.
