Electric Vehicle Crash Prompts Response From Fire Department

SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred this Friday morning.

It happened at around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of South Abe Street and West Concho Avenue.

The crash was between an EV Cadillac Escalade and a BMW SUV. The fact that an electric vehicle was involved, and that it was reported to be smoking after the crash, prompted a heightened response from the San Angelo Fire Department.

The combination of extreme heat, chemical reactivity, and internal design of batteries makes electric vehicles resistant to conventional suppression techniques. Unlike typical fires, stopping the visible flames does not always eliminate the hazard.

However, the vehicle was not smoking by the time first responders arrived, as it was initially reported to dispatch.

The collision caused the BMW to slide off the roadway and into a field near Kids Kingdom park.

No injuries were sustained from the crash, and paramedics evaluated those on site.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

Traffic was slowed to a single lane on the busy street as crews worked to clear the roadway.
