Big Lake Man Killed in I-10 Crash After Exiting Vehicle

BIG LAKE, TX - A 42-year-old man from Big Lake, Texas, died Thursday after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 10 in northwest San Antonio following a minor crash, authorities said.

Patrick C. McPhaul, also known as Chase or Prep, was pronounced deceased at a local hospital just after 11 a.m. Feb. 26, 2026, according to Bexar County records. The San Antonio Police Department confirmed his identity and described the incident as a three-vehicle crash that shut down westbound lanes of I-10 for several hours near the Camp Bullis Road exit and The Rim shopping district.

Police said the crash occurred around 10:20 a.m. McPhaul briefly exited his vehicle after a minor initial collision to speak with another driver. As he returned to his vehicle, a Chevrolet work truck struck him from behind. The impact caused him to hit a concrete barrier, after which the truck struck him a second time, authorities reported.

The incident remains under investigation by SAPD. McPhaul, born June 17, 1983, in Colorado City, Texas, was a Reagan County 4-H agent and a prominent figure in the agriculture and livestock community. He graduated from Reagan County High School in 2001, earned degrees in agricultural leadership from Texas Tech University and Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and previously served as a 4-H agent in Crockett County.

He was active in stock shows, serving on committees for the Sandhills Stock Show and as an official for the Collegiate Livestock Contest in San Antonio. McPhaul was a member of First Baptist Church in Big Lake and also received the Horizon award from the local Chamber of Commerce.
