BIG SPRING, TX — Big Spring police have arrested a 23-year-old man and charged him with intoxication manslaughter following the death of a 7-month-old girl who was injured in a two-vehicle crash on New Year’s Eve, according to the Big Spring Police Department.
Police said officers were dispatched about 8:22 p.m. Dec. 31 to the 500 block of South Gregg Street for a reported crash involving a white 2011 Toyota Corolla and a red 2009 Nissan Frontier pickup.
According to a preliminary investigation and witness statements, the Corolla was traveling east in the 300 block of West Fifth Street when the driver failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign. The Nissan Frontier was traveling south on Gregg Street when the two vehicles collided.
The driver of the Frontier, identified as 50-year-old Mauricio Hernandez, and a juvenile passenger were taken to Scenic Mountain Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Corolla, identified as 23-year-old Colton White, and a 7-month-old passenger were also taken to the hospital.
Police said the infant was later transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where she died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Following the investigation, White was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter. Police said he was also arrested on an outstanding warrant related to a rider not secured by a safety belt.
The investigation remains ongoing.
