WALL, TX — AirMed1 was dispatched Wednesday night to a fatal wrong-way crash on U.S. Highway 87 South that killed one driver and injured another, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash was reported at about 9:30 p.m. DPS said a pickup traveling north in the southbound inside lane struck an SUV head-on at highway speed. Both vehicles had single occupants.
A witness told San Angelo LIVE! the SUV had just passed him in the outside lane when the pickup appeared “out of nowhere” in the inside lane going the wrong direction. The collision happened immediately beside him.
DPS confirmed one driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The surviving driver, a female, suffered injuries to her right leg and was transported by AirMed1 for emergency treatment.
The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office reported all southbound lanes of U.S. 87 near Loop 570 were closed following the crash. Wall Volunteer Fire Department, the sheriff’s office and DPS responded, with DPS leading the investigation. Officials estimate the roadway will remain shut down for two to three hours while troopers process the scene.
Traffic is being diverted onto Loop 570. DPS has not released the names of those involved.
