DPS: Distracted Truck Driver Caused Crash That Killed Coleman Teen

BROWNWOOD, TX — A 17-year-old girl from Coleman was killed Monday morning in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 67 in Brown County, according to a preliminary report from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened around noon near Mile Marker 558 as both vehicles were traveling northbound. Investigators said the driver of a 2019 Freightliner Sprint truck became distracted by a cell phone mounted inside the vehicle and collided with a 1996 Ford Escort carrying three passengers.

Samantha Nell Johnson, 17, seated in the second row of the Ford, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two other occupants of the Ford — a 64-year-old driver and a 66-year-old front-seat passenger, both of Coleman — suffered serious bodily injuries and were transported to Hendrick-Brownwood.

The truck’s driver, Melvin Leon Joyner, 23, of Blue Mound, refused medical treatment for a minor injury.

After the impact, the Ford Escort traveled through a wire fence and came to rest in a pasture. Road conditions at the time were wet, with cloudy and drizzling weather reported in the area. The posted speed limit in the area is 75 miles per hour.

DPS said the crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending the outcome.
