CALLAHAN COUNTY, TX — A 56-year-old man died Monday morning after being trapped inside a pickup that overturned, struck several trees, and caught fire on State Highway 36, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Troopers said the crash happened at 10:20 a.m. near mile marker 328. A 2015 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling west when it veered into a ditch, hit a pole, and then collided head-on with several trees before rolling and bursting into flames.
The passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene by Abilene Professional Services. His seatbelt use was unknown.
He was initially identified by authorities as Ulises Moeno of Houston and Mexico, but the Texas Department of Public Safety said his identity is still under investigation.
The driver was able to escape the vehicle and was transported to Parkland Hospital by CareFlight with incapacitating injuries. His seatbelt use was also unknown.
He was initially identified as 31-year-old Victor Duarte Jose of Houston and Honduras, but his identity is also under investigation, DPS said.
Troopers reported clear weather, dry road conditions, and a posted speed limit of 75 mph at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
