SAN ANGELO, TX — A single-vehicle crash sent one man to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after his SUV struck a traffic signal at the intersection of North Bryant Boulevard and West 14th Street.
It happened around 2 p.m. According to authorities at the scene, the white Ford Expedition was traveling northbound behind another vehicle when the lead car began stopping for a red light.
“I guess the driver was either following too close or going too fast,” an officer said at the scene.
He "freaked out,” swerved to the right to avoid a rear-end collision, ran off the road, jumped a drainage ditch, and struck the traffic light.

The impact damaged the SUV’s rear-left side and caused some minor damage to the signal pole, though it remained functional.
San Angelo Police said the driver was an older man who suffered a leg injury and was transported to the hospital.
A female passenger was also in the vehicle but was not hospitalized.

Emergency crews, including San Angelo Fire Department personnel and city signal maintenance crews, responded to the scene to assess the damage and begin repairs on the light.

The incident occurred just yards south of the intersection and did not cause major traffic delays.
