Hermleigh ISD Bus Crashes in Scurry County, No Injuries Reported

SCURRY COUNTY, TX — A Hermleigh ISD activity bus carrying 10 students was involved in a single-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning, April 1, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash occurred just before 6 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 4114 and County Road 4123. The bus was eastbound on CR 4114 and failed to make a left turn at the unlit, gravel-covered T-intersection, continuing through and off the roadway. DPS cited the driver for unsafe speed.

“Unsafe speed” in this instance does not imply speeding, but rather that the bus was traveling at a speed unsafe for the conditions of the roadway, lighting, and other factors, DPS clarified.

The students on board were between the ages of 14 and 17. No injuries were reported.

Hermleigh ISD Superintendent Jessie Ellerbe confirmed the bus was en route to a contest and thanked local emergency responders for their action in a statement posted to the district’s social media accounts.

“Our team responded immediately to ensure that all necessary protocols were followed,” Ellerbe said, adding that student safety remains the district’s top priority.
