Infant Among 5 Killed in 17-Vehicle Pileup on I-35 in North Austin

AUSTIN, TX — Five people, including an infant, died in a 17-vehicle pileup involving a semi-truck late Thursday night on Interstate 35 in North Austin, according to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS).

Emergency crews responded around 11:20 p.m. to the crash in the 3100 block of I-35 southbound near Parmer Lane. ATCEMS confirmed three adults, one child, and a infant died at the scene. The Austin Fire Department rescued three people trapped in vehicles.

Officials said 11 others were transported to hospitals, including two adults in serious condition at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center and two others with severe injuries at Dell Seton Medical Center. One patient was hospitalized with minor injuries. Three children were taken to Dell Children’s Hospital, with one suffering possibly life-threatening injuries. Three other adults were treated for minor injuries at Seton Medical Center.

Diesel fuel spilled from the semi-truck but was contained, officials said. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has reopened I-35 frontage road lanes, and tolls are waived for drivers between State Highway 45 and U.S. 290 eastbound.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No arrests or charges have been reported.
