LOXAHATCHEE, FL — Two Palm Beach County deputies were killed and a third injured Thursday morning when an SUV struck their motorcycles just outside the entrance to Lion Country Safari, a popular tourist attraction.
According to Florida news outlets, the crash happened around 10:30 a.m. on Southern Boulevard, west of Seminole Pratt Whitney Road, and resulted in a large emergency response.
It's being reported that the deputies were on duty riding department-issued motorcycles when the SUV collided with them. One deputy was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.
Aerial footage from the scene showed three mangled motorcycles and a heavily damaged SUV. Southern Boulevard was shut down following the crash, along with access to the safari park.
Emergency crews and law enforcement vehicles flooded the area, with video showing at least one deputy being transported on a stretcher. The injured deputy’s condition was not immediately available.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has announced a 4 p.m. press conference to provide further details.
