Two Killed in Tri-Wheel Motorcycle Crash in Comanche County

DE LEON, TX — Two women were killed in a single-vehicle crash involving a tri-wheel motorcycle on Farm to Market Road 1496 on Tuesday, July 16, six miles northwest of De Leon, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Leslie Renae Mitchell, 54, of De Leon, and Nancy Menzdorf Chapman, 68, of Stephenville, were pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Johnny Connie. Mitchell, the driver, was pronounced dead at 1:59 p.m., and Chapman, the passenger, at 2:05 p.m.

The crash happened at 12:52 p.m. when the 2015 Can-Am Spyder F3, driven by Mitchell, was traveling southbound on FM 1496. Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and onto the shoulder, where it skidded, struck a mailbox, and rolled. Both Mitchell and Chapman were thrown from the vehicle. Neither was wearing a helmet.

DPS investigators suspect Mitchell may have experienced a medical issue that led to the loss of control.

The weather was clear and the road conditions were dry at the time of the crash. The posted speed limit on FM 1496 is 60 mph.

No other vehicles were involved, and no other injuries were reported.
