30-Vehicle Pile-Up on Highway Between Rankin and Midland

RANKIN, TX — High winds and blowing dust reduced visibility significantly and may have caused a 30-vehicle crash on SH 349 just north of Rankin just after 4 p.m.

According to the Texas DPS FM 1555 is closed completely. This is the major crossroads that is the epicenter of the crash.

DPS warned motorists to avoid SH 349 until the crash scene is cleaned up. DPS did not say how long it will take. We have not been informed of injuries.

SH 349 connects Rankin and US 67 with Midland. The FM 1555 intersection is about five miles north of Rankin. A thunderstorm with high winds and rain, and tops up to 40,000 feet passed through the area when the crash happened. That line of thunderstorms passed through San Angelo shortly thereafter. As of 6:15 p.m., the frontal boundary and thunderstorm line is over Brownwood.
