Sheriff's Office Teams Up with TxDOT to Reduce Serious Crashes

SAN ANGELO, Texas  — The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office has joined forces with the Texas Department of Transportation’s #EndTheStreak campaign in a concerted effort to curb dangerous vehicle-related crashes across the Lone Star State. This collaborative initiative aims to identify and address hazardous traffic areas within Tom Green County that are prone to motor vehicle and commercial motor vehicle crashes.

In an extensive push from October to December, law enforcement actively engaged in the Special Traffic Enforcement Program Comprehensive (STEP COMP) and Special Traffic Enforcement Program Commercial Motor Vehicle (STEP CMV) initiatives to bolster the campaign's objectives.

Under the STEP COMP campaign, law enforcement units conducted a staggering 383 traffic stops, targeting various traffic violations. Throughout these interventions, 426 violations were identified, leading to either written citations or warnings. The primary infractions observed were speeding and intersection violations, resulting in six arrests during this period.

Simultaneously, during the STEP CMV campaign, law enforcement executed 77 traffic stops, focusing on a spectrum of traffic violations. Of these, 60 stops involved commercial motor vehicles, while 17 pertained to non-commercial vehicle infractions. A total of 89 violations were recorded, with a majority of 72 violations related to commercial vehicle offenses.

Remarkably, the concerted efforts of the STEP COMP and STEP CMV zones correlated with a notable reduction in major vehicle crashes. These areas experienced a decline from three major crashes in October to zero incidents in December, showcasing the efficacy of targeted enforcement measures in enhancing road safety and averting serious accidents.

The partnership between the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Transportation underscores a proactive approach toward mitigating roadway risks and safeguarding communities from the devastating consequences of traffic accidents. Through continued collaboration and enforcement initiatives, stakeholders remain committed to fostering safer roadways for all Texans.
