ROBERT LEE, TX – A Winters woman was hit by a bus while walking with a gas can outside of Robert Lee on Thursday morning.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on Oct. 19, 2023, at around 6 a.m., Texas DPS Troopers were dispatched to State Highway 158, near the 392-mile post west of Robert Lee, for the report of a major crash.

Once on the scene, the troopers discovered that a female, later identified as Tamara Mathis, 35, of Winters, was struck by a 2000 Blue Bird Bus.

The trooper's investigation revealed that the bus was traveling westbound on SH 158. The driver of the bus observed a vehicle approaching from behind and moved over to the westbound shoulder of SH 158 to allow the vehicle to pass.

Mathis was walking westbound on the westbound shoulder of SH 158 with a container of gas. She was walking back to her vehicle that had run out of gas. The driver of the bus did not see Mathis until the bus had moved onto the shoulder of the roadway.
