SAN ANGELO, TX – Two men in their 60s crashed into each other on US 84 Wednesday afternoon. The crash resulted in the death of one man and serious injuries for the other.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on Oct. 18, 2023, at around 3:03 p.m., Texas DPS was dispatched to US 84, just .3 miles northeast of Roscoe, for the report of a major crash.
Once on the scene, the troopers discovered two vehicles. The first vehicle was a 2013 Dodge Avenger. In the vehicle was 62-year-old Claude Kimmel, 62, of San Antonio. He was pronounced deceased by a Nolan County Justice of the Peace.
The other vehicle, a 2021 Toyota Rav 4, was occupied by a single occupant. The 67-year-old Seminole man was transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital with serious incapacitating injuries.
The troopers' investigation revealed that the Avenger was traveling north on Business Highway 84 in the eastbound lane. The Rav 4 was traveling east on US Highway 84. The Avenger failed to yield the right of way to the Rav 4 at the intersection controlled by stop signs at Business 84 and US 84. The Avenger struck the Rav 4.
Both of the men were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. At the time of the crash, the weather was clear, and the road was dry. The posted speed limit at this location is 75 miles per hour.
