Woman Killed in Fatal Wrong Way Crash North of Comanche

SAN ANGELO— A crash north of Comanche killed a young woman last week.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on July 18, 2023, at 8:17 p.m., a 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck was traveling southbound in the northbound lane on FM 2247 and was driving on a curve in the roadway.

A 2013 Ford Explorer was driving northbound on FM 2247 and approached the same curve in the roadway the Dodge Ram 3500 was driving in. The driver of the Dodge Ram pickup, 18-year-old Waggoner Wayne Shelton, steered back towards the southbound lane and the driver of the 2013 Ford Explorer, identified as 21-year-old Samara Ann Christine Johnson, steered left towards the southbound lane in an attempt to avoid the Shelton’s vehicle.

Both vehicles crashed head-on in the center of the roadway.

Johnson, who was wearing her seatbelt, was pronounced dead on scene by Justice of the Peace Johnny Conine. Shelton had a 14-year-old passenger in the vehicle, and both were transported to Hendrick North Hospital. The 14-year-old passenger was treated and released with non-incapacitating injuries and Shelton had incapacitating injuries but in stable condition. Neither were wearing seatbelts.

The weather conditions were clear, and the road was dry.
