COMANCHE, TX – A 63-year-old Comanche man was killed while he was laying under a car attempting to attach a tow chain when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a suspect in a car chase being pursued by Sheriff's Deputies.
According to information from Texas Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Marc Couch, a 2015 Dodge Avenger driven by 31-year-old Eric Jerome Davis of Big Spring was traveling south on SH 36 fleeing from Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Deputies in commission of a felony offense.
At the same time, two vehicles, a 2008 Buick Lucerne and a 2007 Mercury Milan were stopped in a parking lot on the north side of the intersection of SH 36 and US Highway 67 in east Comanche. The Buick was disabled, and the Mercury was parked in front of it with a pedestrian, 63-year-old Daniel Jerome Shaefer, attempting to connect a tow chain between them.
Shaefer was laying under the front of the Buick connecting a tow chain as the speeding Dodge was approaching. The driver of the Dodge traveled over an overpass at a high rate of speed approaching a stop light-controlled intersection, failing to stop.
Davis disregarded the stop light, losing control and crashing into the two parked vehicles. Shaefer was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash.
Davis was taken into custody by HCSO deputies and transported to Comanche County Medical Center where he was released after treatment to the Comanche County Sheriff, Chris Pounds and booked into the jail.
