Pedestrian Dies After Lying Down on I-20

RANGER, TX – A pedestrian lying down on I-20 died after being run over.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on June 6, 2023, at around 1 a.m., DPS troopers were dispatched to I-20 mile marker 350, within the city limits of Ranger, to respond to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, the troopers discovered a 2015 Kia Optima that had crashed into a female pedestrian on the interstate. The woman, later identified as Sherry Maxey, 64, of Eastland, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Jesse Speer.

The troopers' investigation revealed that the Kia was traveling east on Interstate 20 (IH-20) at milepost 350. Unbeknownst to the driver, a pedestrian was lying in the right-hand lane of the eastbound lanes of IH-20 at milepost 320. The Kia struck the pedestrian in the roadway.

At the time of the crash, Maxey had no identification on her person. Investigators are awaiting toxicology reports from the medical examiner to determine if impairment may have contributed to her death.

During the crash, the weather was clear, and the road was dry. No one in the Kia was injured.
