High Speed Rollover Crash in the Rain Kills 1 on Rural West Texas Highway

SWEETWATER, TX – A rollover crash during a thunderstorm on Thursday left one person dead on a rural West Texas highway near Sweetwater.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on May 25, 2023, DPS troopers were dispatched to US 84, near mile marker 438, in response to a report of a rollover crash.

Upon arrival, the troopers discovered a 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck that had overturned in the center median. Medical emergency personnel were also called to the scene to assist the driver, 29-year-old Jason Soto of Hereford.

Unfortunately, Soto did not survive the crash and was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Angie Collier at 9:45 a.m.

The investigation revealed that the pickup truck was traveling west at the 438-mile mark of US 84. Soto was driving the vehicle at an unsafe speed and, due to the weather and roadway conditions, lost control, veering off the road into the center median, resulting in a skid and subsequent overturn. It's worth noting that Soto was wearing a seatbelt.

The speed limit at the crash site is posted as 75 mph. At the time of the crash, the weather conditions were cloudy, and the road was wet.
