Co-Workers Seek Help for Injured Motorcyclist

SAN ANGELO, TX — The young man injured in the motorcycle crash on Tuesday night was coming home from work, our investigation revealed. David Mendez loved riding his motorcycle and worked at the Bentwood Country Club as a cook in the front of the restaurant and at the grill.

According to our previous report, Mendez, who works the late shift at Bentwood, had just gotten off worked and as he drove home, he turned onto Knickerbocker Road at Bentwood Drive. Police determined that on his way into town he had a green signal at the next light at Valleyview. However, a black Mazda sedan made a left turn off Knickerbocker and onto Valleyview failing to yield the right-of-way to Mendez, according to police.

Mendez did not have much time to react. In the subsequent collision of Mendez’s motorcycle and the black Mazda sedan, Mendez’s helmet departed his head. He sustained major trauma to his head.

As is sometimes necessary, after he was stabilized, Shannon Medical Center transferred him to a San Antonio hospital where he has already undergone one surgery. A second surgery is expected to occur Friday. Once on the path to being healed, Mendez will likely need some reconstruction surgery on his face.

The staff at Bentwood wants to help and we are asking for your help as well. A Bentwood bartender and coworker, April Cunningham, is managing a GoFundMe online donations page for Mendez. They are raising a modest amount of money to help Mendez’s family with expenses such as travel to and from San Antonio and for lodging during the long hospitalization David and his family will endure.

If you’d like to help, here is the link to the GoFundMe page for David Mendez.
