DPS: Pedestrian Struck & Killed on Dark Rural Highway

CROSS PLAINS – A woman walking along a rural highway outside of Cross Plains Sunday night was struck and killed by a passing pickup.

Information released Monday by Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Marc Couch shows 38-year-old Danielle Elaine Eppard of Cross Plains was walking along Highway 36 about two miles east of Cross Plains in the dark Sunday evening just after sunset around 6:54 p.m.

60-year-old Byron Keith, also of Cross Plains, was driving the speed limit heading east on SH-36 and did not see the pedestrian in the roadway.  Keith's 2017 Ram 1500 struck Eppard killing her.

The deceased's body landed on the south side of the roadway.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cross Plains is 100 miles northeast of San Angelo in Callahan County.

Keith was wearing a seatbelt and was injured in the crash.  He was treated and released at the scene.
