Rubber Necking Truck Drivers Crash Eyeing Vehicle Fire

SAN ANGELO, TX – Drivers distracted by a vehicle fire on Thursday night crashed their pickups on Highway US 87 N. near Grape Creek.

According to the Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department, on Feb. 15, 2023 at 5:56, volunteers with the GCVFD were dispatched to US 87 for the report of vehicle fire. When they arrived the entire vehicle was in flames.

"Grape Creek VFD arrived onscene to find a single vehicle on fire, a 2015 white GMC Acadia SUV, fully envolved with heavy fire and smoke coming from the engine compartment of the vehicle, said Chief Jose Rivera. "The occupants of the vehicle were able to exit the vehicle, without incident, and without injuries."

However, just as the crew was packing up more chaos ensued.

"While on scene of a vehicle fire at the 7400 block of US HWY 87 North in Grape Creek, a two vehicle crash occurred, approximately a quarter mile from a vehicle fire scene, on the southbound lane of US HWY 87 N. Grape Creek VFD responded to find that two Dodge trucks had collided in the southbound lane, both coming to a stop in the median of the highway."

One truck was occupied by five adults, while the other truck was occupied by one adult, and three small children. Two ambulances from San Angelo were dispatched to the scene but no one was taken to the hospital.
