Curious Hit and Run Crash Takes Out Mailboxes and 2 Telephone Poles

SAN ANGELO, TX — A single vehicle crash near the intersection of N. Irving St. and W. 19th St. took down two telephone poles. We believe the poles carried electricity.

According to a witness at the scene, after the truck that hit and toppled the two poles came to a stop, a “large Hispanic man” got out of the pickup truck and ran. Police were investigating whether or not the truck was stolen. Later police determined that it was not.

While the investigation was occurring, Irving, 19th and parts of N. Chadbourne St. are closed to traffic. Also, we have spotted police activity at Irving at 22nd Street, a few blocks north of the crash scene.

Police spokesman Officer Espinoza said police were perplexed as to why the driver of the truck ran. Traffic investigators were given a direction of the fleeing driver and they found him a few blocks north on Irving St.

According to the crash investigation so far, the pickup was traveling westbound on 19th Street and departed the prepared surface, mowing down several mailboxes before hitting and toppling the two telephone poles.

The driver of the truck was cited for failing to stop and leave information after damaging property. Espinoza categorized the incident as a hit and run and said the driver had no outstanding warrants, which is usually the reason a driver flees a crash scene.

Well after reporters and police arrived at the scene, two people arrived with a police traffic investigator, got into the Dodge Dakota truck, and drove it away. Espinoza said the person driving the truck away from the scene was not the same person accused of crashing it. The truck could actually drive on its own power after this crash.
