DPS: Both Drivers Killed in Fiery Wrong Way Head-on Crash

ABILENE – Two West Texas men were killed in a fiery head-on crash on I-20 in Taylor County according to information released Wednesday from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS Sergeant Fred Biddle of Abilene reported 78-year-old Samuel D. Caldwell of Sonora was driving a 2018 Toyota Tundra eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-20 on Nov. 20, 2021 at 4:34 a.m.

50-year-old Darrell V. Mills of Abilene was driving a 2018 Ford F-150 legally westbound in the westbound lanes of I-20 at miler marker 272 at the same time. The investigation indicates the Tundra was traveling the wrong way and crashed head-on into the F-150.  The F-150 burst into flames and was completely burned.

Both vehicles ended up in the median.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Biddle says neither driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Road conditions were clear and dry at the time.  The cause of the deadly crash is still under investigation.
