Winters Woman Killed in Rollover Crash

WINTERS – A Winters woman in her 70s was killed Tuesday following a rollover crash in Runnels County.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on Aug. 31 at 5:41 p.m., troopers with the Texas DPS were dispatched to U.S. 83, just four miles south of Winters, for the report of a rollover crash.

When they arrived, the troopers discovered a 2008 Dodge Ram that had rolled over in the barrow ditch.

Inside the vehicle the sole occupant, Elena R. Torres, female, 74, of Winters, was taken to the North Runnels Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Torres' body was then taken to the Winters Funeral Home. She was reportedly wearing her seatbelt.

Troopers have determined that the Ram was traveling North on US 83. While attempting to pass another vehicle, the Ram went off the West side of the road. The driver over corrected, lost control, and the Ram rolled over in the West side barrow ditch.

The posted speed limit at the location is 75. At the time of the crash the weather was clear and the road was dry.
