Drunk Driver Indicted for Crash That Killed Prominent Abilene Man

ABILENE, TX –– A Taylor County grand jury has indicted an intoxicated driver charged with causing a fatal crash.

Back in March of this year, 50-year-old Mark Rogers was traveling in a Dodge Challenger on Highway 36.

The investigation revealed James Wells was speeding and passing cars on the opposite lane of traffic.

According to police, Wells attempted to pass a northbound pickup truck that carried Rogers, his wife, and three children.

Rogers was a well-known figure in the community as a former sports director for KTXS and as the most recent president of West Central Texas chapter of Big Brothers Big Sister.

As Wells tried to pass the Rogers' pickup, he returned to the northbound lane when a vehicle traveling southbound lane approached.

This caused Wells to clip the pickup, which then veered off the road and struck a tree before coming to a stop.

Rogers was killed in the crash and his wife and children were transported to a local hospital.

Wells was formally indicted with intoxication manslaughter
