SAN ANGELO, TX -- A major oil spill is causing a lot of work for San Angelo first responders as they attempt to clear the scene.
According to Officer Welch of the SAPD, a driver towing an oil tanker onboard a trailer was traveling east on Houston Harte when it approached the Bell St. overpass.
Watch Video from the crash scene:
The driver failed to account for the height of the oil tanker and as it attempted to pass under the bridge. The impact caused the tanker to become dislodged and begin to spill onto the roadway and into the stormwater drains. The driver was not injured in the crash.
Before the scene can be cleared, TxDOT will need to assess if any structural damage was caused to the bridge with the impact. At this point, it is unknown the amount of oil that has leaked onto the roadway.
No citations have been issued as the crash remains under investigation.
