Victim in Fatal Crash Identified

ABILENE, TX – Abilene Police Department has identified 31-year-old Francisco Pena as the victim in the fatal crash that occurred Tuesday morning at the intersection of Oldham Ln and Industrial Blvd.

According to APD official Facebook page, the crash involved a white 2008 Toyota Tundra and a gold 2002 Dodge Ram pickup. The Tundra was driven by Marshall Slater, 26, and was traveling east on Industrial Blvd. Slater stopped at the stop sign on Oldham Ln and then proceeded into the intersection.

The Ram pickup driver was Florencio Martinez, 59, and his passenger was Pena. According to the report the Ram, traveling south and hauling a trailer filled with concrete material, broadsided the Tundra. The Ram continued to be in motion until it struck a utility pole, causing it to snap in half. The trailer filled with concrete broke and slammed into the cab of the Ram, causing extensive damage.

Martinez suffered minor injuries, but Pena was trapped in the vehicle. The Abilene Fire Department worked for two hours to extract him from the vehicle and transported him to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. APD stated he sustained major injuries to his head and neck area, as well as his lower body. He was pronounced dead at 5:45 pm by the Justice of the Peace.

A passenger in the Tundra was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No citations have been given at the moment and alcohol does not appear to be a factor. The investigation is ongoing, but according to APD, the driver of the Tundra appears to have failed to yield the right of way.
