2 Truckers Dead in Fiery Crash Near Sonora

SONORA, TX — Interstate 10, six miles west of Sonora, was the scene of a fiery crash between two truck tractors towing semi-trailers early Tuesday morning.

According to the Texas DPS, Servilio L. Placeres Gonzalez, 49, of Houston, was westbound on I-10 in a 2009 Volvo truck tractor towing a semi-trailer, just west of Sonora. His speed was catching his 18-wheeler up with another trucker named Luis A. Sanchez, 72, of Sugarland. Sanchez was driving a 1997 Peterbilt and also towing a semi-trailer.

DPS said that Gonzalez’s Peterbilt rig struck Sanchez's semi-trailer when in the outside lane at around mile marker 394. After the collision, both rigs crashed and quickly caught fire. Sutton County Justice of the Peace Joseph Harris pronounced both drivers dead at the scene.

The crash happened at 1:28 a.m. on Sept. 10, DPS said. The speed limit on I-10 where the crash occurred is 80 mph. The weather was clear and the roadway dry, DPS stated.

Trooper Nicole Martin of the Sonora sector of the DPS led the crash investigation with assistance from five additional troopers from Sonora and Junction.
