San Angelo Police Dispels Social Media Rumors of Officer-Pedestrian Crash at Nasworthy

SAN ANGELO, TX -- San Angelo Police have dismissed a rumor floating around social media that one of their own had been involved in an auto-pedestrian accident at Lake Nasworthy on the Fourth of July.

Rumors said that a San Angelo Police vehicle had struck and injured a kid. That is not true, police said in a press release on Friday.

"Despite what a social media post circulating in the area says, there was not an accident involving a San Angelo  Police Department vehicle and pedestrian at Lake Nasworthy on July 4," Public Information Officer Tracy Piatt-Fox said in the press release. "Many citizens and media outlets have reached out to Department officials regarding the claim, which had been posted by a concerned citizen."

The Facebook post which sparked the rumors has since been deleted. The user admitted he had been misinformed, police say.

Piatt-Fox reassured the community of San Angelo Police's transparency later in the release.

"In the event that an SAPD vehicle and pedestrian or private vehicle occurs and causes injury to either parties, the Department's Public Information Officer or the Chief of Police's designee will inform our citizens and media outlets of the incident, the age and sex of the parties involved, the severity of the injuries sustained in the crash, the method of transportation if the injured party is transported to a treatment facility, the contributing factors to the crash, as well and any penalties associated with the involved parties (citation or arrest.)," the statement continued.
