BEXAR COUNTY, TX – A 17-year-old Somerset Independent School District student rear-ended a Somerset ISD bus carrying more than 40 elementary students Tuesday, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said.
The accident occurred just before 7 a.m. in the 20800 block of Highway 16 near Smith Road.
This week is National School Bus Safety Week.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, the Somerset ISD school bus had its stop sign deployed and flashing lights on when the driver rear-ended it.
The front of the teen's Ford Bronco was wedged under the back of the bus, trapping the 17-year-old inside. Firefighters had to cut off the doors of the car to get the teen out, according to deputies.
The teen driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
Maury Vasquez, a spokesperson with Somerset ISD, said there were no life-threatening injuries to the people onboard the bus.
The majority of the students on the bus were transported to another vehicle and taken to school to be checked out.
Vasquez said a handful of students were evaluated by paramedics at the scene and some students were picked up by their parents.
