Structural Collapse Closes Downtown Businesses, Part of Chadbourne
SAN ANGELO, TX-- A roof collapse at the popular Fuentes Downtown Cafe and The Man Shop on Chadbourne has halted business.
Emergency personnel responded to the collapse mid-morning on Sunday. There has been no word on injuries or the cause of the collapse.
John Fuentes, owner of Fuentes Downtown Cafe said he and his staff were cooking food for a meeting with the City of San Angelo at the time of the collapse.
“We heard a loud boom,” Fuentes said. “Next thing we know, we see smoke coming out of the front dining room and we noticed the wall had collapsed.”
According to Barbara Strain, the owner of The Man Shop in downtown next to the cafe, Fuentes had said his roof was “bulging out.”
“They knew it was odd,” Strain said. “They didn’t think about checking anything.”
The Man Shop also suffered damage to their wall, which connects to Fuentes. That meant her son, Michael Strain, had to go up on San Angelo Fire Department’s Ladder 1 to assess the damage.
“We saw lots of bricks sitting on the roof,” Michael Strain said. “John Fuentes’ roof is angled in toward the joining wall between the two businesses.”
Both businesses will have to remain closed until they can make repairs. Strain said the structural engineer will be out at the site tomorrow.
The two southbound lanes of Chadbourne will remained closed as crews assess the damage, according to fire inspector Brent Donaho.
