Out of Control Wind Turbine Forces Family of 5 out of Big Country Home

LORAINE, TX-- KTXS News reports that a Mitchell County family of five has been temporarily displaced after a wind turbine started spinning out of control.

Christopher Madrid told KTXS he was woken up by a loud boom around 2 a.m. Sunday. Madrid did not think much of it because his family lives close to I-20. He thought it was just a tractor trailer with a blow out.

However, Madrid continued to feel his house shaking, so he went outside.

When outside, he said he saw sparks falling from the turbine. He then evacuated his family, fearing the sparks may start a fire.

Third Planet Windpower reportedly told Madrid the sparks were from the brakes trying to stop the turbine from spinning so fast.

Crews have yet to control the turbine, according to the report.

Third Planet put the family up in a hotel, but does not know when it will be safe for them to go home.

KTXS was told by Third Planet that there were no problems with any turbines on Wednesday.
