STERLING CITY, TX -- A well known and veteran helicopter pilot died Friday in a crash near Sterling City while attempting to land his Robinson R-22 on a trailer according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The DPS says 66-year-old Ewing Fowler McEntire of Sterling City was attempting to land his helicopter on a trailer, McEntire lowered down close to the trailer then rose back up in the air.
A witness heard a loud popping sound emitted from the aircraft and then the aircraft crashed to the ground on its right side. FAA was notified according to the DPS.
That was approximately five miles west of Sterling City at 8: 13 p.m. on Friday and the conditions were clear skies and dry.
McEntire was pronounced dead by Sterling County Justice of the Peace Stacy Dyer.
Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration continue to investigate the Sterling County crash.
No one was injured on the ground.
