Chevy Trailblazer Driver Injured in Rollover Crash in South San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo Police Department Traffic Investigator Officer Stephen Quade had a difficult puzzle to solve when he arrived at the scene of a rollover crash that happened at around 8:30 a.m. on S. Bryant Blvd. near the Sonrisa’s Riding complex on the south side of San Angelo.

According to Quade, a white Chevrolet Trailblazer was being driven north on the inside lane of S. Bryant/U.S. 87/277. Near the Trailblazer, traveling slightly ahead but in the same direction, was a white Chrysler 300 in the outside lane. Quade said the Trailblazer was in the Chrysler’s blind spot.

Another vehicle was attempting to merge onto Bryant from an on-ramp and the driver of the Chrysler 300 changed lanes in front of the Trailblazer to give the merging traffic room, causing the driver of the Trailblazer to take evasive action.

The Trailblazer driver drove off the left side of the road into the grassy median. Then, Quade said, the driver jerked the steering wheel too hard to the right to get back on the prepared surface. That over-correction to the right was followed by another over-correction to the left, and that caused the Trailblazer to rollover. The 360-degree rollover ended with the Trailblazer back upright with momentum which, when coupled with the position of the steering wheel, sent the Trailblazer into an uncontrolled journey off the main highway and onto the access road on the east side of the highway. There, it re-entered the highway via the on-ramp. Then, because the tires on the left side were blown, the Trailblazer turned 180 degrees as it traveled back into the highway, and came to a stop facing the opposite direction.

Quade said the driver of the Chrysler 300 was cited for making an unsafe lane change. The driver of the Trailblazer was rushed to San Angelo Community Medical Center for treatment. Quade thanked the witnesses to the crash who helped him unravel the details.
