SAN ANGELO, TX -- DPS Trooper Matthew Walts says the driver of a Mail Jeep was delivering mail near Ratliff Rd. and Country Club Rd. Friday when the vehicle caught fire and burned.
Trooper Walts says the vehicle began leaking some fluid, there were sparks and the Jeep caught fire and burned. There were no injuries and the mail was saved. There was some fire damage to the fence nearby.
The call for a vehicle fire came in just after 4 p.m. Still no word on the cause of the blaze.
On May 9, another Mail Jeep caught fire and burned on Mt. Nebo Rd. and Chaparral Rd. in Grape Creek.
Rural Route mail carriers are typically contract workers and not employees of the postal service and they use personal vehicles.

Yantis, FYI... Rural carriers ARE usually employees of the USPS. I know because I was a substitute rural carrier. Yes, there are some contract routes, that are awarded to bidders, but many, if not most, rural carriers are USPS employees.

PermalinkOne last "Jeep Wave" for this poor machine... Rest In Peace. I've made some lifelong memories in a Jeep, buried my buddies 4x4 Dodge out on the trail and that old Wrangler kept going like there was nothing to be driving through.
