Lot's of accidents here lately, 2 children sent to the hospital in the past week, others lost their lives here recently as well... How many folks have to be hurt or die before we take notice? Working on the drilling rigs a few years back, my company told us that driving to and from our rig location was statistically more dangerous than working on the rig... I admit, as a younger man I was prone to speeding and getting into battles for first place on the roads here but I also paid a hefty price for that and it took me several years of growing up and hearing the truth about the dangers of driving like a dingbat to change, not to mention a lot of money to pay tickets and monthly surcharges for a number of years. For the past 3 years I have driven sitting up like a man in my drivers seat, buckled up with 2 hands on the wheel... It's funny when I see the looks I get for my driving position from guys who act just like I used to, they think I'm a chump because I'm not trying to be cool like them... I can almost hear the judgments flying around their little noggins, body language says it all... Pull up together at a red light on Friday at dusk, I'm doing my regular routine, driving safely out of the need to drive not out of my drive to need a boost to my low self esteem and here is Mr. Leaned Back, sitting low with the window down playing loud music and has a point to prove looking at me like I'm a lesser man because I'm no longer playing the game... I don't get mad though, I used to be just like that when I was a chump, when I was a boy and I cared about image rather than the lives of others... Back when I boosted my low self esteem by acting like I was cool and must be more of a man than others... What was I really? A copycat, a fraud, an imitator of others... I may have had my own way of doing it but I was only acting as cool as I've seen others act, sadly unoriginal at all... Hopefully some of these boys out here will grow up as I have and find their sense of worth from something besides how cool they are driving around trying to dominate the road. I digress, the point here is that if all of us simply paid more attention to the task at hand, we could practice patience on the road and create a better environment for ourselves... When I see things like this family that died out by Sterling I think of my own family and I drive that much more attentive and dedicated to the rules so in a lot of ways, the tragedies we see do serve a greater purpose if we let them. I would also recommend a dash cam as well, there will certainly be those who do not care still and with a cam there's no need for my word against yours when something happens. Be safe San Angelo and drive better or these lives that get lost and hurt will be in vain.

You grew up and got smart. Alas, it is not all 'acting cool' that causes the accidents. It is alcohol, drugs, inattention, cell phones....people are stupid. Unfortunately, it takes a major wake-up call for some, for others...you can`t fix stupid. Apologies to Larry...
