Police: Pregnant Female Driver Seriously Injured in Crash on Houston Harte Expressway

SAN ANGELO, TX — A two-vehicle collision on the westbound side of Houston Harte Expy/Loop 306, near Comfort Suites, shut down all west bound lanes of the loop Friday afternoon.

According to San Angelo police spokeswoman Tracy Gonzalez, a white 1993 Buick Century sedan, driven by a female, for an unknown reason, drove into the lane under construction and came to a stop. The Nissan was also transporting another female who was carrying an unrestrained infant. Gonzalez said the car was disabled.

A Reese Albert road crew in a pickup truck drove up to the Buick to check on the welfare of the occupants, as the Buick was occupying the portion the road that the construction company was working on. The Reese Albert crewman confirmed that the occupants of the car were in good health and began walking back to his pickup. As he approached his truck, he looked back and saw the Buick begin to pull out of the construction area and into the busy lane of traffic.

Just as the Buick entered the lane, a black 2010 Jeep Laredo driven by a 17-year-old female, transporting  8- and a 9-year-old child passengers hit the Buick.

Gonzalez said all occupants of the Buick were injured, including the infant, and were rushed to an area hospital. No one in the Jeep was injured.

As first responders responded to the crash and the scene was being cleared, all westbound lanes of the Houston Harte were shut down.

The crash is getting special attention by San Angelo police. Both the SAFD Patrol Division and the Traffic Division are investigating the circumstances of the crash. Gonzales said it is too early in the investigation, but said it appeared to be an unsafe lane change conducted by the Buick. Citations are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Gonzalez said the crash happened at 4:19 p.m.
