MASON, TX — A 20-year-old Olney woman was killed in a two-car, high speed crash six miles south of Mason early Saturday morning.
According to Texas DPS, Megan Rene Adkins was southbound on U.S. 87 just after a heavy rain occurred. It was just after 2 a.m. on May 20. Along this stretch of road, U.S. 87 is a four-lane, undivided highway.
Standing water from the heavy rain that had just passed through had formed in all lanes of travel, DPS reported.
Adkins’ 2005 Kia Spectra hydroplaned and entered a right side, broad skid. Out of control, the Kia crossed over into the oncoming lanes of traffic.
At about the time Adkins’ Kia was skidding into the northbound lanes, Teodora Garcia, 22, of Edinburg was driving north on U.S. 87 in a 2008 Dodge Avenger. Garcia’s Avenger struck Adkins’ Kia on the passenger side at highway speed.
Both vehicles came to a rest in the northbound lanes facing northwest.
Mason County Justice of the Peace Treg Hudson pronounced Adkins dead at the scene. Garcia suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
The speed limit where the crash occurred is 70 mph. DPS reported weather conditions as raining with standing water on the roadway. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles, DPS reported.
